Greek remincises on the past through alternative bedroom pop storytelling and R&B inspired syncopation in recent single “OCTOBER”
Words by Miranda Urbanczyk
Following the release of his 2024 album ACCELERATOR with his latest EP, “OCTOBER/HERO””. “HERO” and “OCTOBER” allow the audience to have two separate listening experiences. “HERO” is a slow-paced, mellow song while “OCTOBER” is quite the opposite. With its energetic beat and unique synth, “OCTOBER” is a track I simply cannot get enough of.
“OCTOBER” is a reference to a time, or person in his life greek is trying to move on from. I found this concept extremely relatable, drawing from my personal experiences of wanting to move on from a person or situation. The beauty of music is expressing yourself, and your feelings through sound. greek cultivates a safe place for his listeners through his vulnerable and applicable lyrics.
I just wanna break free from you, it stings
What if I ever make it out of here?
But should it take so long?
What if I never let you go?
greek begins the track questioning his feelings, wondering when the pain will come to a close. Towards the end of the record, his questions develop into statements. He no longer wonders if things will change, and instead admits the aching realization that they won’t.
But I can’t let you go
October don’t you go away
I just can’t live another day
Even though this song is virtually about feeling trapped, it has a way of compelling you to tap your feet. In this way, the upbeat energy of the track distracts the pain laced throughout. “OCTOBER” is empowering, placing the listener in their own bubble by entrancing them in the outstanding realness of greek.
