Meg Elsier releases captivatingly moody new album spittake

Words by Kendall Deckert

Meg Elsier releases new album ‘spittake’ on target, soak it in. Elsier’s new album outlines a mixture of moody, angst, and funk, making you feel each one in every song with her strong lyrics. Each song tells a different story, pulling you into Elsier’s life. In this album, Elsier dives deep into what it can be like in her head and her struggles.

Meg Elsier started in New England, but is now based in Nashville, TN where she has continued to add funky angst to the indie-rock genre. Before Elsier released ‘spittake’, she released a single off the album ‘ifshitfuq’. In the song ‘ifshitfuq’, Elsier digs deep into the motions of a relationship. She describes that you can try to be someone you're not but sometimes it will never be enough. Sometimes we can get so lost in the lust of what we think is love and what we think is good for us, that we lose ourselves.

Elsier makes you feel seen and gives you content you can relate to. When an artist opens up about personal things in their music, you automatically feel a connection with them. What directly draws me in is the fact she captivates you and pulls you into her feelings. When listening to the album, it's hard not to appreciate the rawness Elsier delivers. This album almost feels confessional. In the song ‘Youngestchild’, she states “I drive like my father I should 'cause he taught me but some things I'll never quite learn like how to open wine right or change my oil or stop being a little girl”. Elsier highlights the realization that no matter how old she gets, she  might always need her parents.

I often find it hard to find artists willing to be real with their music. People like to listen to their music and be able to relate and feel seen. Especially with the emotions Elsier expresses in her album, including people who have experienced heartbreak, sorrow, exhaustion and loss. She takes the most complex parts of growing up and coming home and compacts them into a dreamy melodies that mimic an overwhelming and heavy nostalgia; her talent of translating these profound growing pains with concise presion gives relief to the existential dread of change and “old news” that are part moving on and looking back.

After the release of ‘spittake’, Elsier announced her upcoming North American fall tour dates, supporting Finom visiting places such as Philadelphia, New York and Vermont.

You can now stream Meg Elsiers ‘spittake’ on all music platforms.
