Kit Major talks origin, image, and self expression after sharing latest single “Let Me Be In Your Band”

Words by Miranda Urbanczyk

In our latest interview, Best Left’s newest contributor Miranda got the chance to chat with singer/songwriter Kit Major who effortlessly embodies the essence of cool and glam punk. Drawing inspiration from the iconic CBGB scene and navigating the sweet spot between 90s American grunge and Brit Pop, Kit Major's music resonates with a sense of timeless rebellion and infectious energy. As anticipation builds for her upcoming EP release, Kit Major is poised to make waves as a rising star in the world of rock music.

Best Left Magazine: How did you come up with and decide on your artist name?

Kit Major: Kit is my nickname, but one night while drunk with my sister, waiting for a Charli XCX concert, we played around with last names, and Major felt perfect, like a Debbie Harry Bratz doll.

Best Left Magazine: You are uniquely yourself in everything you do, especially regarding your image and music. Is expressing yourself something that comes easy to you?

Kit Major: Thank you! I’ve always been really into experimenting with my image and exploring all kinds of music. I’ve always been in my own world and wear my inspirations on my sleeve - sometimes literally!

Best Left Magazine: How did you incorporate self-expression into your latest music video for Let Me In Your Band?  What was your inspiration for the video?

Kit Major: I wanted an excuse to be punched in the face. Just kidding. I wanted to play with the idea of fighting for your right to rock without being too on the nose. I work in a really visual way and saw this song as a fight between two glam rock stars.

Best Left Magazine: Let Me In Your Band is heavily reminiscent of Rock and Roll, how has the genre affected you as an artist?

Kit Major: I’m a big punk rock nerd- I spend a lot of time going into the archives of rock music. I love that rock and roll has always had elements of imperfection and expressive freedom. I’m really inspired by moments when you hear musicians really just playing their music and jam. Some of my inspirations are Sex Pistols, The Clash, Blondie, The Cramps, Buzzcocks and Oasis.

Best Left Magazine: Are there any collabs on the EP that fans can look forward to? If you could collaborate with anyone, who would be your first choice?

Kit Major: There’s a song I wrote with my guitar player, AJ Peacox, who also collaborated on Dirty Misfit. I’d love to collab with The Lemon Twigs one day.

Best Left Magazine: In what ways has your hit song I Wish U Didn’t Hate Me So Much transformed your career? Was this expected?

Kit Major: Not expected at all! It’s really cool because that song is a little out there. Its success has encouraged the way I think about my writing in that I see that there is a group of people who also like the unconventional, and I love that.

Best Left Magazine: If you had to choose which song are you most proud of? Is there one in particular that showcases your growth as a musician?

Kit Major: I think Dirty Misfit is such a lightning in a bottle track and has a lot of the elements I love in punk/surf rock. I think if you play that and then Pray 2 Pop or Scream Queen, it shows my love for rock and guitar has always been there, I’m just writing with a dirtier soundscape in mind.

Best Left Magazine: Do you expect similar results from your upcoming EP? How does the EP differ from your other projects?

Kit Major: This project is different because it’s introducing and going deeper into my new sound. It’s what I see as the Love. Sick. Major. era. This collection is the first part of my experimenting with punk and Brit pop. I hope to reach people who also dig this sound and want to be in this world of misfits and lovers with me

Best Left Magazine: Are there any plans in the works to perform the new tracks from the EP shortly after its release?

Kit Major: Yes! I’d love to put on a release show for the EP and play around a bit on the west coast.

Best Left Magazine: One last question, will you Please Man Let Me In Your Band?

Kit Major: Band practice starts on Monday!
